Carl's Notes

2022 Domaine de Grand Pré “Nova Scotia” Brut
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley
50% L'Acadie Blanc, 50% Seyval Blanc | Dry (RS 10.0g/l) | 11.5% ABV
91pts Carl’s Wine Club

This Traditional Method sparkling wine might be my favourite of this year’s Grand Pré selection, with incredible freshness and Nova Scotia attributes. The mousse is fine and creamy, the bubbles are tenacious and lively while the nose is crisp with aromas of green apple and fresh baked buttery croissant. The palate is soft, clean and persistent, with round edges, and impressive depth offering flavours of baked Ambrosia apple, Anjou pear, and even a splash of white peach on the mid palate. The finish is mineral, showing flinty salinity and a hint of citrus peel to close it off with a nice tartness. This is brilliance! Best value traditional method sparkling from the 2022 vintage! (CWC, 22/07/23).

I won’t lie to you, I was very excited to taste this new release of Tidal Bay, and Domaine de Grand Pré did not disappoint. Slightly fuller body than the previous vintage, but equally defined by orchard fruits and minerality, this wine has a very unique sense of place or sense of terroir where fresh ocean breeze, seawater and oyster shells reflect directly in your glass. On the nose, this Tidal Bay wine offers a mix of poached apple, peach and citrus all mingling with classic Nova Scotia seawater minerality. The palate offers an unexpected richness with flavours of apple, peach, pear and a long-lasting hint of saltiness on your lips while lemon-ginger chamomile tea develops at the very end. A fantastic wine! (CWC, 22/07/23).

2022 Domaine de Grand Pré Riesling
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley
100% Riesling | Dry | 11.5% ABV
91pts Carl’s Wine Club | Bronze Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships

A wonderfully balanced Riesling with loads of expression and personality. From citrus to orange blossom, chamomile and green apple, this dry Riesling offers so much versatility. Great for a summer-sipper but also fantastic with spicy food, there’s a lot to like about this 2022 Riesling. Softness on the nose with aromas of pear and pineapple followed by a palate that is much more direct and defined with green apple, lemon custard and ginger. The finish is long and crisp with mouth-watering acidity and delicious minerality. Another solid wine, and I like the aging potential. (CWC, 22/07/23).

Pairings: Vietnamese pho soup, cajun shrimp

2022 Domaine de Grand Pré Chardonnay
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley
100% Chardonnay | Dry | 12.0% ABV
90+pts Carl’s Wine Club | Bronze Medal, All Canadian Wine Championships

This wine is great in so many ways. This stainless-steel fermented Chardonnay is pure and crisp, showing great energy and lots of classic Chardonnay attributes. Nova Scotia has great terroir and fantastic potential for cool climate Chardonnay. The nose is super expressive offering loads of white flowers, citrus, orange blossom and almond cookies. The palate expands well for a un-oaked wine and shows great concentration. The flavour definition is impressive, and a great deal of lemon, pear and baked apple are on full display. A slight salinity appears on my lips at the very end which adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Well done! (CWC, 22/07/23).

Pairings: salmon ceviche, lobster rolls

2022 Domaine de Grand Pré Rosé
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley
L’Acadie Blanc, Marechal Foch | Dry | 12.0% ABV
90pts Carl’s Wine Club

This Rosé was the best value wine and deserve an honorable mention among 57 other Canadian Rosés tasted side-by-side in our 2023 Rosé marathon. An absolute GEM for under $20. The nose is a tad shy but offers aromas of apple, strawberry, red cherry and honey melon. The palate is dry and medium body, offering a creamy mid palate with mouth-watering acidity and flavours of red apple, cherry, crabapple and rhubarb with a hint of dried basil and white pepper on a pulsing finish. With or without food, this wine can make a hot day much more manageable. (CWC, 22/07/23).

Pairings: butter chicken, coquilles St-Jacques

Winery Price: $17.22 plus tax/dep
2019 Domaine de Grand Pré Castel
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley | Dry wine (R.S. 0.0g/L) | 12.5% ABV
100% Castel | 89pts Carl’s Wine Club

A wine with character and personality! Extremely dark, deep and rich, this wine exudes tobacco, licorice, black fruits and ripe plum. The wine has savoury notes highlighted by black tea and herbaceousness, finishing on a note of black pepper and bacon fat. The light tannins are soft and round. It’s hard to make a comparison between this wine and commonly known vitis vinifera, but if I had to name one, I would think of Petit Verdot. (CWC, 06/04/22).

Food pairing: smoked brisket, mushroom stew
Drink now until 2024
Winery price: $18.09 plus tax

Bonus Picks

2022 Domaine de Grand Pré L’Acadie
Nova Scotia, Annapolis Valley
100% L’Acadie Blanc | Dry | 11.5% ABV
89+pts Carl’s Wine Club

This is one of the very key grape varietals of Nova Scotia, which was originally from Ontario. An interesting blend of oyster shells, florality and herbaciousness on the nose with the addition of ripe pear make for a unique aroma profile. The palate is energetic and round, with zippy pink grapefruit along with tropical flavours on the mid-palate. There’s lots going on on the mid palate with richness and complexity all along. The finish showcases the classic Nova Scotia salinity. (CWC, 22/07/23).

Pairings: seafood chowder, crusted tilapia
Drink now until 2026
Winery Price: $16.35 plus tax/dep
Domaine de Grand Pré “Novados” Apple Brandy | 500ml

Crafted from a blend of apples grown in the Annapolis Valley and matured in oak barrels, this spirit has inviting aromas of baked apples with lingering notes of toasted coconut, nutmeg and vanilla. The Story & Winemaker

Winemaker Fred DiProfio
Along the Bay of Fundy in the Annapolis Valley, adjacent to a UNESCO world heritage site, you'll find Domaine de Grand Pré, located in Grand Pré, Nova Scotia.

We were thrilled to taste wines from this region that boasts the world's most astonishing high tides, Canada's third most important fruit producing region, and over 20 wineries that are now producing world class wines.

It was in 2000 that Hanspeter Stutz and his family opened the doors to their winery, and to a wine experience like no other for Canadian and international wine lovers.

The winery has expanded to include an internationally acclaimed restaurant, and a recently opened Inn inside a gorgeously updated 1828 heritage home on site.

Winemaker Fred DiProfio
Jürg Stutz became the winemaker at Domaine de Grand Pré in 1999 after studying Oenology at Zurich University of Applied Science in Wädenswil, Switzerland with a BS in Oenology and Viticulture.

The wines he creates not only represent what makes Nova Scotia unique but also reflects who he is as a person.

Jürg has used the mantra “let the work speak for itself” as a guiding principle to develop his signature style.

His wines are clean, precise, and unpretentious—characteristics that perfectly capture Nova Scotia’s unique terroir and define Domaine de Grand Pré.

Said more simply: Jürg lets the grapes speak for themselves so that the wines can tell their story.
